Kitabu App Reviews
Could you please fix folowing error: 1. When doing right click on a word then select menu item "Look up", Kitabu switches to strange mode in which it scrolls between chapter, not pages. 2. Toggling TOC button changes current visible page. I think many users of this great app would be happy having simple searching text field. Thank you in advance!
Not working
doesnt work with epub.
No search function, no bookmarks…
No text search, no bookmarks, doesnt save layout options, no scrolling/paging toggle… I could go on. This app is useless.
I didnt expect this, but this app is a huge leap forward in this kind of apps. It has everything it needs and nothing more. The transitions between pages are sleek and the library is nice too. Thanks for a great free app, keep up the good work!
pretty good
easy to use, nice features including table of contents, FREE
The current version ( 1.0.4 ) does not support 2 byte content!
The previous versions worked fine on 2 byte books ( e.g. Chinese ). The current version seems to be broken.
Very nice.
Very nice and good looking. The only thing i didnt like is no bookmarks and will not save setting or layout for books. Hope to see them in future.
Animation & bookmarks
This is a really great free app. its the ibook app for the mac, all it needs is just a bookmarks and animation. thx1
What I liked about Kitabu: - Font type & size are adjustable, and the page automatically adjusts with it so the only scrolling is sideways like page-flip instead of up and down AND sideways - Adjustable columns (1, 2 or 3) - Easy to learn & use Whats lacking that can be improved on: - While it is possible to jump further into the book via the percentage scroll bar, if possible, include a box to insert/type in a specific percent - I liked the table of contents function, but when I initially used it to jump to a specific chapter, the scrolling seemed to malfunction. Instead of moving onto the next page, it skipped to the next chapter. Is this a technical problem or is there a way to get out of the chapter-scrolling mode into the page-by-page-scrolling mode? Thanks for the app!
I just got this from the app store and tried to open three DRM free EPUB books that I just bought and it wont render any of them. They are added to the library without a problem, but when I try to read them there is no content. Another free app that you shouldnt bother with.
I was hoping this would let me check ePub files Ive made with InDesign. It wont. It claims the ePub files are DRMed and refuses to open them. I know for a fact there is no DRM in the files because I made them myself.
Great Job
This is an example of great software. An app that you can simply search for, and start using right away, best of all its free.
Works one out of five times on average. I have tried several DRM free epub books. It simply does not display anything at all from the book - just blank pages. It does work occassionally, and its free.
wouldnt open an unprotected ePub
great start…
Almost there!
Alls good except it needs bookmarks and notes!!
Works for me :)
Downloaded Huger Games and now I can read it here! Clean interface. Thumbs up!
Cannot add bookmarks or highlight
Otherwise I will give it 5 star. Easy to use.
Its free, and it looks like it will look good someday, but its just not sufficiently functional to read a book on yet. Other folks have mentioned the absence of bookmarks and the desirability of setting and layout saves for individual books, and those would be good features to have. I was looking for a minimalist ebook reader and between the current design and those two options, Kitabu would fit the bill… if only it could read the EPUB format reliably! Instead, out of about thirty EPUBs that I have (all of which render properly and are readable in Calibre), only about two are readable in Kitabu. With the rest, I can read the first few pages, but after that, the software starts rendering the text slightly off page, and then eventually fails to page properly at all, skipping the remainder of the text in a chapter and instead only going to subsequent chapter title pages. These are non-DRM files. Hopefully the developer will keep at it, but being able to actually see the text of the book is pretty much job one, and Kitabu doesnt do it reliably enough yet.
So many ways to make this app crash. Horrible interface. For example, if you hide the toolbar, theres no way to show it without restarting the app. And that is because it doesnt save settings or your place in books most of the time. I explored a few other ebook readers, and settled on calibre. Google it.
Havent loaded a lot of books to see if DRM-free books give errors, but I have noticed that when the reader is in full screen mode on Lion and you click on the "Library" button it drops out of full screen but stays in the book. If you then click on the Library button again, the app crashes. The text is good, and the columns are nice. But it would be better if the actual column widths respected reasonable widths for reading. So if you are in zoomed or full screen display and go to one column, the lines of text are too long, which is bad for reading. Instead, it should white-space the margins, like "reader" mode does in Safari, to keep the line length better for natural reading. Also, reading postion seems to be based on chapter starting points, not the actual place in the book last read -- like a book mark. This should be addressed right away! Additionally, some form of marking and noting should be added in some future version. Good start -- keep going!
